102 apartments Prins Hendrikkade Rotterdam

Transformation office building Prince Hendrikkade into 102 apartments has been realized.

The building on Rotterdam’s Noordereiland has a rich history. Built in 1893 as a Steam Coffee Spoon Mill and warehouse, in 1968 the building was converted into the offices of the Rotterdam door-to-door newspaper “De Havenloods” and the building was given a new look. All the adjustments over time have created a disjointed picture.

The upcoming transformation into a residential building will restore unity and take into account the interesting architectural details still present. It also restores the original dichotomy in the building block. The decorative vertical strips (lisenen) from the original factory building will be restored in structure and detail, and the characteristic steel windows with tilted center window from the 1968 remodel will be recreated in a slim aluminum profile. Each dwelling will have a French balcony, referring in image to the loading doors of the old warehouse. On the fourth floor, the houses have a zinc-clad bay window that protrudes slightly from the current façade line. At the corner building, the top two residential floors recede, creating a special accent.
